Master entrance requirements

Admission requirement for the Master’s degree program in “Art History: Works – Contexts – Discourses”:
First university degree: Diploma certificate of the previous course of study

  • a Bachelor’s degree program with a minimum standard period of study of six semesters at a university in Germany or abroad with at least 90 credit points in the Art History portion of the program or an equivalent degree with equivalent subject-related study and examination qualifications. If the Bachelor’s diploma certificate is not yet available, a minimum of 60 credit points in Art History must be verified before the application deadline. Admission will be granted on the condition that the applicant provide a Bachelor’s certificate that completely verifies the required 90 credit points within the first semester of the Master’s degree program or
  • a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum standard period of study of six semesters at a university in Germany or abroad with at least 60 credit points in the Art History portion of the program or an equivalent degree with equivalent subject-related study and examination qualifications as well as passing a selection interview. In individual cases, additional achievements in art history may be required. If the Bachelor’s diploma certificate is not yet available, a minimum of 40 credit points in Art History must be verified before the application deadline. Admission is granted on the condition that a Bachelor’s diploma certificate is submitted within the first semester of the Master’s degree program which fully demonstrates the required 60 credit points.

Admission requirement for the Master’s degree program in “Art History: Works – Contexts – Discourses”, if “Christian Archeology and Byzantine Art History” is selected as the focus are
First university degree: Diploma certificate of the previous course of study

  • a Bachelor’s degree program with a minimum standard period of study of six semesters at a university in Germany or abroad with at least 50 credit points in those parts of the program dealing with “Christian Archeology and Byzantine Art History” or an equivalent diploma with equivalent subject-related study and examination qualifications. If the Bachelor’s certificate is not yet available, a minimum of 33 credit points in Christian Archeology and Byzantine Art History must be verified before the application deadline. Admission is granted on the condition that a Bachelor’s certificate is submitted within the first semester of the Master’s degree program which fully demonstrates the required 50 credit points in this subject.

  • a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum standard period of study of six semesters at a university in Germany or abroad with at least 32 credit points in those parts of the program dealing with “Christian Archeology and Byzantine Art History” or an equivalent diploma with equivalent subject-related study and examination qualifications as well as passing a selection interview. If the Bachelor’s certificate is not yet available, a minimum of 22 credit points in ‘Christian Archeology and Byzantine Art History’ must be verified before the application deadline. Admission is granted on the condition that a Bachelor’s certificate is submitted within the first semester of the Master’s degree program which demonstrates the required 32 credit points. In individual cases, additional achievements in “Christian Archeology and Byzantine Art History” may be required.

Proof of proficiency in the German language to the level of the “German Language Proficiency Examination for Admission to Higher Education for Foreign Applicants (DSH)” is required for foreign applicants from non-German-speaking countries.

Students must have basic passive knowledge of Ancient Greek for focus studies in ‘Christian Archeology and Byzantine Art History’. Proof is not required for application. Proof of knowledge of Greek within the scope of the Graecum qualification either by a higher education entrance qualification certificate, state supplementary examination in accordance with the applicable version of the State Ordinance on Supplementary Examinations in Latin and Greek of July 13, 1993 (Law and Official Gazette, p. 191) or comparable achievement must be provided until registration for the examination module.
