Subject Matter

History deals with the past of mankind, distinguishing between “prehistory” and “history” proper, i.e. the time for which written sources are available.

On the basis of studies on individuals or social groups in their political, social, cultural, religious, geographical and economic spheres, historians strive to understand the basic patterns of human action. By investigating the past, they hope to derive criteria for assessing the present. Every generation poses its own questions to history and, accordingly, gets different answers.
