Subject Matter

The artistic-educational and academic course B.Ed./M.Ed. Music at the Mainz School of Music prepares students for careers as music teachers at secondary school level.

The basic course of study with an artistic-educational career objective is the Bachelor of Education Music (teaching at secondary schools), which the Master of Education course follows on from as a requirement for teacher training.

Students choose an instrument or voice as their focal area and acquire skills in creating music independently to a high level. Full professors, assistant professors, and lecturers give individual and group lessons in various instruments and in voice. In addition to taking part in artistic lessons, students attend courses on music theory (auditory training, composition, arrangement) and (music history from historical and systematic perspectives). In music lessons and teaching practicals, they develop models for their subsequent careers and gain practical experience in typical school ensembles (brass, string and choir class). Ensemble practice (symphony orchestra, practice orchestra, choir, practice choir, jazz/rock/pop choir, big band) is part of both the Bachelor’s and the Master’s courses.

A high level of musical talent, which is assessed by the School of Music during a special application procedure (aptitude test), is required for completing the course successfully.
