CampusRadio
CampusRadio is a radio project of JGU Mainz and offers students an introduction to the medium of radio. Since 2002, CampusRadio has been reporting weekly about life and culture on campus. The program is divided into a magazine and music program. Whether it be university news, interviews, articles, profiles or moderation - at CampusRadio, various areas are open for those from all disciplines who are interested. Simply come along to join in on an editorial meeting and have fun.
CampusTV
When the university is in session, CampusTV regularly produces a 30-minute magazine with current contributions from teaching and research, studying, and campus life. Interested students from all disciplines are invited to contribute.
Choir singing training
The aim of choir training is to enable talented students to train and thus participate in (semi-) professional and amateur choirs alongside their main degree program. Training begins each semester. It includes individual and small group training and lasts for six semesters. Choir training is primarily aimed at students of all faculties at the University of Mainz and the University of Applied Sciences, Mainz; however, other interested people may also apply. A prerequisite is basic knowledge of musical notation. Experience in singing in a choir and basic knowledge of an instrument is advantageous. An aptitude test is required for participation.
Computer courses at the Center of Data Processing
The Center of Data Processing offers the program "IT for Efficient Study" to new students of all faculties. The program teaches students basic knowledge about word processing, spreadsheets, online research and email in a short period of time. Subsequent courses offer more advanced knowledge. Each semester, the center also offers numerous courses on image processing, the Internet and system administration. Students can learn programming languages, too.
Foreign Language Center
The Foreign Language Center offers language courses in English, French, Italian, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Turkish to students in all disciplines. The courses are divided into four levels. One level consists of nine weekly semester hours, i.e. three semester courses of three hours each.
Japanese Studies
Project participants will become familiar with Japanese culture (economics, politics, literature, film, law), as well as the Japanese language. Japanese Studies can be taken by students in all faculties and by guest auditors each semester. In order to obtain the supplementary certificate of Department 05, students must successfully complete two proseminars, one regional studies seminar, and four successive levels of language courses.
Mainzer Polonicum
The Mainzer Polonicum is a course on which basic knowledge of the Polish language and culture can be acquired. Participation is open to students in all faculties and is free-of-charge, with the exception of a small contribution for travel expenses. The course is designed for beginners with no prior knowledge and lasts from March to September or September to April. It includes two intensive phases in Mainz and Krakow during both lecture-free periods, as well as four SWS courses in the lecture time in between, plus an intensive course to complete the program.
Soft skills
In addition to corresponding courses in the departments and the career service of the Student Counseling and Information Center, other facilities at the University of Mainz offer seminars and workshops in the training of soft skills, such as rhetoric, time management and stress management.
Studium generale
General Studies offers students the opportunity to complement a degree program with cross-disciplinary events. These events are aimed at all university members and the non-academic public. Each semester, several focus points are offered; in the summer semester, additional focus points are set by the Johannes Gutenberg Endowed Professorship. In addition, various lecture series, conferences, individual presentations, etc. are held in cooperation with departments. In general, no course certificates are awarded for the events.
