Applying with the Simplified Change Procedure

Under specific circumstances, JGU students have the option to move on to a master’s degree using a simplified application (simplified change procedure, “vereinfachtes Wechselverfahren“). The requirement for participating in the simplified change procedure is that with the completion of the bachelor’s degree, the subject-specific prerequisites for the desired master’s program have been completed and, therefore, no further check of your documents is required.

You can find all of the master’s programs which are part of the simplified change procedure in the 2020 summer semester here, as well as the relevant bachelor’s programs with which you can apply for this procedure.

Please check carefully if the combination of your target master’s program and completed bachelor’s program allows you to apply using the simplified change procedure.

If your target master’s program is not listed below, please follow the regular application path.

The Simplified Change Procedure

If you are currently studying at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, you can apply using the simplified change procedure under the following conditions:

  1. You have already earned your bachelor’s degree – or are in the process of completing it – and can provide proof of 135 credit points from your bachelor course of studies in JOGU-StINE by the application deadline, at the latest.

If you are applying with 135 completed credit points, please take careful notice of the information on common misunderstandings during enrollment below.

The bachelor’s degree entitles you to use the simplified change procedure when moving on to your master’s program.

  2. Please confirm this with the information on the relevant master’s program below.
Students moving from Bachelor of Education to Master of Education with the same subject combination fulfill the subject-specific requirements for participating in the simplified change procedure.
  3. You can provide proof of the language requirements set out in the description of the course of studies.

  1. Check the admission requirements and the deadlines for your target course of studies.
  2. Fill out the online application using JOGU-StINE.
The deadlines listed for selective and master’s programs without restricted admission remain valid.
You will be led through the application step by step. It will take about 10 minutes. In the application overview, each completed section will be marked with “OK”. Don’t forget to submit the online application online when you are finished.
  3. Print out and sign the electronically submitted application and submit it per mail (not email) or in person to Student Services, keeping in mind the application deadline.
The print-out of the online application will include a checklist for the documents to be submitted along with the application.
  4. As soon as we have received all of the documents and you have re-registerd for the next semester, you will be enrolled in your desired master’s program, as long as you have reached 135 credit points in your bachelor’s program. You are not required to provide proof of your credit points, since they can be accessed by Student Services.
  5. You will receive your semester documents for the next semester in JOGU-StINE, as usual.
  6. Please submit documents certifying the successful completion of your bachelor’s degree to Student Services by the end of the first academic master semester, so you will be able to continue the master’s program in the second semester.

Students currently enrolled in JGU’s Bachelor of Education who would like to continue with a Master of Education with the same subject combination always apply for a change of program to the master’s program using the simplified change procedure.

If you are studying for an education-related bachelor’s degree in another German state or with a different focus, you will not be able to apply using the simplified change procedure. Please apply with the regular required number of documents using the general master’s program application.

Applying for a Higher Academic Semester in a Master's Program

If you are currently enrolled in a bachelor’s program and would like to continue studying in a higher academic master semester, please use (if the combination of bachelor’s and master’s program is compatible) the simplified change procedure, as well.

Please note that in these cases, the bachelor’s degree must be submitted by the following deadlines so the change from bachelor’s to master’s program can be carried out:

  • Enrollment for the winter semester: bachelor certificate must be submitted by September 30
  • Enrollment for the summer semester: bachelor certificate must be submitted by March 31

"I am obligated to take up a master’s program as soon as I have reached 135 credit points in the bachelor’s program."

False. You are in no way obligated to begin a master’s program before you are finished with your bachelor’s. The 135-credit points rule is simply there to give you the chance to apply even when you have not received the degree certificate by the application deadline.

"I’m going to lose time if I don’t begin my master parallel to the last bachelor semester."

This is only true in very rare cases. Usually, the bachelor thesis and the last bachelor exams require a lot of attention and concentration, even if you aren’t officially taking any classes.

On the contrary, taking on a double workload by simultaneously finishing your bachelor’s and beginning your master’s program can lead to situations that may end up prolonging your studies.

"I have to submit my bachelor degree certificate by the end of the first academic semester of the master’s program, otherwise I will be exmatriculated."

Partially true: If the bachelor degree certificate is not submitted by the end of the first academic master semester, the enrollment in the master’s program is cancelled. If you are both enrolled in bachelor and master’s programs, you may only continue studying for your bachelor’s and must apply for the master’s program at a later date.

If you have completed your bachelor’s degree successfully but the bachelor degree certificate cannot be handed out to you yet, you can have the responsible Registrar’s Office issue a document certifying the completion of your degree.

"The bachelor thesis is my last examination. As soon as I have submitted it, I will receive my degree certificate."

The evaluation of your bachelor thesis by two examiners must still take place. Depending on the examination regulations, this will take between 4 and 6 weeks. The grades can only be entered once the evaluations – including grades – have been submitted. Only then (if the bachelor thesis was the final examination) can the degree certificate /diploma begin to be created.

Therefore, please keep in mind in the correction periods when planning.

"When I ask the Registrar’s Office for a document certifying the completion of my degree, it will be issued immediately."

In order to issue a certificate on the successful completion of a degree, a number of steps are necessary, which all require time. Therefore, please ask the responsible Registrar’s Office for the certificate in due time (in July for a deadline on September 30th or in January for a March 31st deadline).

A document certifying the degree has been finished can, of course, only be issued if the requirements for the degree have been graded and completed.

"Once I have completed all of the requirements for my degree, my bachelor certificate will be issued automatically."

The Registrar’s Offices are not automatically informed of your degree completion. As soon as all of the grades have been entered in Jogustine, you may ask the responsible Student Advising Office to issue your bachelor certificate (per e-mail or per mail).

"When I submit my bachelor certificate to Student Services, I will immediately receive the documents I need for the next semester."

The processing length depends on the current workload. As soon as the re-registration for the next semester has been carried out, you will receive the semester documents online on Jogustine, as usual. We will send you your Student ID per mail.

The office’s workload is usually especially high toward semester’s end (Sept. 30th/March 31st), so please expect a longer processing period at that time. We recommend submitting your bachelor degree certificate to us as soon as possible, so you receive the semester ticket on time.
