Subject Matter
The term biology covers the science of the living, starting with biomolecules as the smallest units, right through to entire ecosystems. Due to the immense scope of the subject, the Department of Biology has decided to focus its future activities in research on the following three areas: 1. Research into biodiversity (ecology, morphology, systematics, evolution); 2. Developmental biology and neurobiology; 3. Structural biology, cell biology, and biotechnology.
Molecular biology as a branch of biology has increased in significance over the past few years. It deals with living organisms and life processes on a subcellular, molecular level. On this level, many of the differences between the groups of living organisms are blurred. Molecular biology therefore overlaps with the physiology and molecular biology of animals, plants and microorganisms, as well as with molecular genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biophysics. Molecular biology acts as a basic science for some fields of medicine and biotechnology. The course teaches the basics of biology and related sciences such as chemistry, physics, and mathematics, then builds on this with specific knowledge from the field of molecular biology. Practice-orientation and knowledge of methods are especially important here. After completing the course, students should be able to carry out tasks within the subject independently. The course provides an initial academic qualification for work in the professional field.
