Subject Matter

The English course for students studying to be teachers as part of a Bachelor's and Master's course is based on the guiding principle of the curricular standards and the goals of teacher training at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Graduates should be able to teach English as a foreign language in a competent and clear manner that is appropriate for the age of the pupils. In order to achieve this goal, the basic components of American Studies, British Studies, and English Linguistics are taught in specialist and teaching-oriented events.

The reformed curriculum of Bachelor of Education (English) is a modular-based and practice-oriented course, which qualifies students to continue on to a Master's degree program and includes teaching internships and educational science components. An integral part of the teacher training course is the extended stay abroad in an English-speaking country, lasting at least three months, which is intended primarily to expose students to different cultures and enable them to better understand the complex social processes and interactions. The Department of English and Linguistics at the Johannes Gutenberg University offers a wide range of exchange programs with universities in Great Britain, Ireland, USA, and Canada. The main features of the teacher training Bachelor's course in English are:

  • modular-based course content with a high proportion of expert knowledge
  • increased professionalism through specialist teaching components and greater focus on practice
  • focus on gaining intercultural and communication skills
  • polyvalent training while shortening the overall duration of the course (study and preparation).

The teaching events in B.Ed. (English) are taught exclusively in English.
