General information on applying for a master’s degree

Are you currently studying at JGU or another German higher education institution and would like to earn your master’s degree at JGU once you have completed your first degree? Are you studying for a first teacher training program (s.a. Bachelor of Education) in a different German state and would like to earn your master’s degree at JGU? Are you studying in a teacher training program in Rhineland-Palatinate with a focus that isn’t on secondary schools (Gymnasien)?

Then you will find all the information you need to apply to the master’s program of your choosing in the following.

Formale Voraussetzungen

Studying for a master’s degree requires the completion of a first degree from a higher education institution. However, you may apply before you have finished your first degree.

Information on Applying Without a Degree Certificate:

You are not yet in possession of your certificate for your bachelor’s degree by the application deadline, but you have already earned at least 135 credits while studying for your bachelor’s degree? In this case, you may apply with a transcript of records which includes the average grade. This must be issued by the respective university (one regular copy).

You will have to submit proof of your completed bachelor’s degree before the end of your first academic master’s degree semester, otherwise your enrollment for the master’s degree will terminate.

If you are applying for a higher academic master semester, the following is the rule: if you are not yet in possession of your degree certificate (which would qualify you for a master’s degree), submit a current transcript of records with your application. Proof of a successfully completed bachelor’s degree must be submitted by enrollment at the latest.

If you are already studying at JGU and would like to apply for a master’s program without admission restrictions, please read the relevant informational pages to find out if you qualify for using the simplified change procedure in your application.

 

Subject-Specific Prerequisites

In order to apply for a master’s program, specific prerequisites must have been fulfilled within the course of your first degree. In several master’s programs, certain language levels are required for which you must submit proof when applying.

Please use the respective program descriptions to inform yourself of your desired master program’s subject-specific prerequisites.

Applications for the summer semester: 

Courses of studies without admission restrictions (zulassungsfrei) October 1 – March 1
Selective courses of studies (zulassungsbeschränkt) October 1 – November 15
Courses of studies requiring an aptitude test October 1 – November 15

Für Bewerbungen zum Wintersemester:

Courses of studies without admission restrictions (zulassungsfrei) April 1 – September 1
Selective courses of studies (zulassungsbeschränkt) April 1 – May 15
Courses of studies requiring an aptitude test April 1 – May 15

Any deviations from these deadlines are made note of in the respective program descriptions.

  1. Check the formal and subject-specific prerequisites in the program descriptions.
  2. Create an account using the JOGU-StINe web portal.
    For selective master’s programs, you may submit up to three equally ranked applications. For master’s programs without admission restrictions, you may submit one application for your desired program.
  3. Fill out the online application and submit it electronically.
  4. Create a printable document of your application by clicking “Print”. Print the document and sign it. It will include instructions on further documents you must submit to Student Services along with the signed application.
  5. Submit the documents to Student Services within the application period. Your documents will first be formally checked by a Student Services employee and then sent on to the relevant faculty to be checked for subject-specific requirements.
  6. You will be informed of the result of your application online through the JOGU-StINe portal as soon as the decisions have been made. An email will be sent to the email address you entered in JOGU-StINe to let you know the official notification has been made available in the document section of JOGU-StINe.

 

Information on the Selection Procedure for the 1st Academic Semester in Selective Master's Programs:

In case more applications are submitted than there are spots, 80% will be awarded based on the selection procedure grade and 20% after a waiting period. The selection procedure grade is based on the subject-specific selection criteria, which you can find in the respective program description.

 

I have received a letter of admission. What should I do next?

In order to accept the offered spot, submit the declaration of acceptance (which you should have received along with the letter of admission) by the specified deadline and pay the semester fee.

Enrollment can only be carried out when all of the documents listed in the letter of admission have been submitted to Student Services.

If you have been accepted to several programs, you must decide on one. By accepting one, you are automatically disqualified from the others. You will also not be waitlisted for other programs.

I was not acceptet to my target degree program.

If you were not admitted in the main admission period or have not accepted an offer of admission, you will be placed on the waitlist. In order to do so, submit the declaration of participation in the waitlist procedure to Student Services by the specified deadline.

I am currently studying for a Bachelor of Education/Teaching at Secondary Schools (Gymnasien) in Rhineland-Palantine

Apply for the Master of Education program as described above and submit all of the necessary documents. It is not necessary that the faculty checks the documents.

 

I am currently studying for a Bachelor of Education with a different focus in Rhineland-Palatinate

Apply for the Master of Education program as described above and submit all of the necessary documents. In this case, the faculties will check your application based on the content of your previous course of studies. Furthermore, the Hochschulprüfungsamt für das Lehramt (HPL) will check the equivalence of your internships.

 

I am currently studying for a Bachelor of Education in a German state other than Rhineland-Palatinate

You can continue your teacher training education at JGU if your bachelor’s degree (worth 140 credit points) corresponds to the Rhineland-Palatinate Bachelor of Education, with the focus Teaching at Secondary Schools (Gymnasien). In order for these prerequisites to be checked, please submit a copy of your course of study’s examination regulations along with your application.

If you have studied with a focus for a different type of school, the Student Advising Offices and Academic Advising Services will check your application based on the content of your previous course of studies. Furthermore, the Hochschulprüfungsamt für das Lehramt (HPL) will examine the equivalence of your internships.

I would like to transfer from a different university to a different master’s program.

For a course of studies you have not studied previously or for which you have not earned any credits, apply for the first academic semester. A placement decision is not required in this case.

I would like to continue the same course of studies, but at JGU.

If you would like to continue the same course of studies at JGU– with the same title and subject-specific designation – apply for the next higher academic semester. A placement decision is not required in this case.

Example:

Current course of study: Master of Science in Biology, 2nd academic semester

=> Apply for the Master of Science in Biology, 3rd academic semester

 

I would like to enter a similar master’s program at JGU.

If you are already enrolled in a similar master’s program, you will need a certificate of placement indicating the recommended academic semester from the responsible Academic Advising Services. For this certificate, the examination and coursework you have already completed are checked in order to determine if the credits may be transferred for the desired JGU master’s program. You will then receive a placement decision, which includes the academic semester you may apply for.

If you receive the certificate of placement regarding the specific semester after the application deadline has ended – because you were still completing academic coursework, for example – submit the certificate by enrollment.
Please note that in selective master’s programs, you may only be enrolled for the academic semester you were accepted for and can provide a certificate of placement for.
