Subject Matter

Geography is a modern science at the interface of natural and social sciences, which examines the earth's ecosystem and society's utilization of space. The research fields of geography extend from a regional to a global level. This research analyzes the processes and the spatial arrangements of natural structures (physical geography) on the one hand, and on the other hand the spatial structures created by man (human geography) as a basis of the organization of life. Research methods both of social and natural sciences are applied.

Classical areas of geography are climate geography, geomorphology, settlement geography, economic geography, and demographic geography. Through specialization and innovation, further research areas have developed: Geoecology, social geography, geography of tourism, etc.

The findings of geography as an applied science are today especially needed when changes in our living space are to be planned and molded. Geographers advise authorities and business organizations with regard to making decisions about locations, conflicts regarding use of space, as well as the planning of landscapes, settlements, and traffic.
