German Language Requirements

Courses of Study conducted in a language other than German

If your course of study allows you to study and complete your exams in a language other than German, you may apply for an exemption from the DSH at the Internationales Studien- und Sprachenkolleg (ISSK) at JGU (Deutsch als Fremdsprache).

You will receive the application form for the Befreiungsbescheinigung with the letter of admission from JGU Mainz.

German course for refugees

For the winter semester 2022/23 we offer a German course for refugees from level B1 - also for refugees with an "university access after successfully passing the Feststellungsprüfung" on their certificate of recognition.

Studying WITHOUT a preparatory German course

If you apply to study without a preparatory German course - i.e. you choose a degree and subject in the online application - you need to submit the following certificates:

  • an officially certified copy of the passed DSH-2-exam or an equivalent
    The following are recognized as equivalent of a passed DSH-2:

    • das deutsche Abitur
    • the Deutsche Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz - Stufe II (DSD II)
    • the Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (GDS)
    • the Österreichische Sprachdiplom (ÖSD) - C1
    • TestDaF with the result 4 x 4 or better (2 x 5 and 2 x 4 or better). Please notice: the result 4 x 4 is sufficent for enrollment but we recommend strongly to attend further German courses in order to ensure successful study. Recommended result to study successfully is 2 x 5 and 2 x 4 or better
    • the exam from the preparatory course (Feststellungsprüfung) of a German preparatory college (Studienkolleg) [see chapter German Language Test])

 

  • one of the following accepted German language certificates. Please note: Before enrolment you have to pass the DSH-2 exam. When submitting one of the following certifcates, we will invite you to take part in the DSH exam at JGU.

 

If  the subject you apply for requires an DSH-1 certificate, you need to submit one of the following certificates when applying in order to be invited to the DSH examination at JGU:

  • onSET Deutsch: assessment of language proficiency in German proficiency (minimum 74 points corresponding to B1 level)
  • Deutsches Sprachdiplom der KMK Stufe DSD I
  • Goethe-Zertifikat B1
  • telc Deutsch B1certificate with one of the following results: “befriedigend”, “gut” or “sehr gut“
  • TestDaF with at least TDN 3 in all four parts of the exam
  • ÖSD certificate B1

If  the subject you apply for requires an DSH-2 or DSH-3 certificate, you need to submit one of the following certificates when applying in order to be invited to the DSH examination at JGU:

  • onSET Deutsch: assessment of language proficiency in German proficiency (minimum 106 points corresponding to B2 level)
  • Goethe-Zertifikat B2 (or Goethe-Zertifikat C1)
  • telc Deutsch B2 certificate with one of the following results: “befriedigend”, “gut” or “sehr gut“ (or Deutsch C1 certificate)
  • TestDaF with at least TDN 4 in two parts of the exam or maximum TDN 3 in two parts.
  • ÖSD certificate B2
  • the DSH-1 ceritificate (certificate of the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer
    Studienbewerberinnen und -bewerber)
