Subject Matter

The Film Studies/Media Dramaturgy Master's degree program offered at Mainz is unique to German universities. Course participants are given in-depth insight into the history, aesthetics and theory of audiovisual media, whereby emphasis is given to the moving image.

The program takes a close cross-media look at dramaturgical activities and staging strategies. The degree program considers aesthetic patterns and narrative design across the various media, covering film, television and theater, radio drama and audio art together with video games and web-based narrative forms. During the course, practice-related trans-medial interfaces and interaction processes are studied and students acquire the capacity to critically examine a wide range of media formats. There is also the option of learning about practical media working procedures and specialized areas such as media law and media management.

When applying for admission, applicants are required to choose to major either in Film Studies or Media Dramaturgy.

Graduates of the two-year course will be qualified to work in professions that require critical-analytic skills in dealing with audiovisual media.

Master Entrance Requirements

Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree showing they have taken a major in Film Studies as part of the integrated Mainz Culture/Theater/Film program, a minor in Film Studies or hold an equivalent degree in a field related to film, art or media studies that shows they have been awarded at least 50 credit points in the subjects film, television or new media by an institute of higher education in Germany or abroad. If the bachelor's degree has not yet been completed by the time of application, the applicant must provide proof of two third of the required subject-specific credit points by the end of the application deadline.

It is assumed that applicants have sufficient active and passive knowledge of the English language to read specialist literature in English and participate in courses taught in English; however, course participants will not be required to produce English language written papers or sit exams set in the English language. (No proof of language skills is required).

Applicants who have not acquired their university entrance qualification at a German institute of higher education or hold a degree from a program that was not taught in German will need to provide proof of proficiency in the German language at the level of the 'German Language Proficiency Examination for Admission to Higher Education for Foreign Applicants (DSH)'.
