Subject Matter

This academic program B.Ed./M.Ed. in music puts a focus on education and will prepare you for a career as a music teacher at the secondary school level (Gymnasium).
The Bachelor of Education in music (for teaching in secondary schools) is the first step in the three-part teacher training program. This is followed by the Master of Education and then finally the teacher training placement. This degree is supplemented with a second teaching subject as well as with courses in education studies.

Artistic, theoretical and didactic aspects can all be found in this degree program. Within the scope of the artistic portion, you will get to pick between a focus on an instrument or voice (classical or jazz/rock/pop) and will gain the skills to compose your own music through private and group lessons. The theoretical aspect includes classes in music theory (ear training, composition and arranging) and music history where you will gain the necessary skills within the field of music.

The didactic classes prepare you with the practical aspects needed later in your career. You will gain knowledge on the fundamentals of musical development and music learning, work with didactic conceptions and models, create your own music educational projects and gain insight into music pedagogical research. This is complemented by an in-depth training for working in school-typical ensembles (brass section, string class, choir class) and in school-practical piano playing, which is a special feature of the degree program in Mainz. The ensemble practice (symphony orchestra, practice orchestra, choir, practice choir, jazz/rock/pop choir, big band) is integrated into the bachelor's and master's programs.

You will need to pass an aptitude test before acceptance into the program. More information can be found here.
