Subject Matter
The Institute of Psychology at JGU offers career-oriented and academically qualifying master’s degree programs in psychology. The programs are research-oriented, based on the application of empirical and scientific methodology, and together admit up to 125 students a year. Graduates of the program are awarded a Master of Science (M. Sc.) in Psychology. Prerequisite for these master’s programs is a B. Sc. in psychology or a comparable degree, as well as the result in a subject-specific qualifying examination (see Hochschulauswahlsatzung).
Students are offered a choice between the following master’s programs:
- Legal Psychology
- Work and Organizational Psychology
- Clinical Psychology & Psychotherapy
- Childhood and Youth
- Human Factors
Programs 1 and 2 start exclusively in the winter semester, programs 4 and 5 start exclusively in the summer semester. Program 3 can be started both in winter and summer semesters.
All programs qualify students for further training as a psychological psychotherapist, according to the guidelines of the German Society of Psychology (deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychologie – DGPs), dated May 6, 2010.
Master entrance requirements
Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree in Psychology or an equivalent degree awarded by an institute of higher education in Germany or abroad. Applicants who are unable to submit their Bachelor degree certificate by the application deadline but can demonstrate that they have acquired at least 135 credit points can submit a certificate showing all academic and exam performance qualifications acquired and their average grade. This certification (original or officially certified copy) should be issued by the relevant institute of higher education, which must also confirm the credit points acquired to date and the average grade. Please note: Art. 11(4) of the University admission regulations of Rhineland-Palatinate (StPVLVO) states that any applicant unable to provide evidence of an overall average grade will rank behind the last applicant with a verifiable overall average grade (grade=4.0) when it comes to allocation of study places. Applicants who are admitted and matriculate have until the end of the first Master's degree program semester to submit their Bachelor's degree certificate.
Applicants will be required to take a subject-specific suitability test: The suitability test specified in Art. 19 (2) HochSchG determines whether an applicant has the skills necessary to successfully complete a Master's degree program with a clinical-/health- or application-oriented focus. The test takes 120 minutes and covers various psychological and methodological areas.
It is assumed that applicants have sufficient active and passive knowledge of the English language to read specialist literature in English and participate in courses taught in English; however, course participants will not be required to produce English language written papers or sit exams set in the English language.
Applicants who have not acquired their university entrance qualification at a German institute of higher education or hold a qualification from a program that was not taught in German will need to provide proof of proficiency in the German language at the level of the 'German Language Proficiency Examination for Admission to Higher Education for Foreign Applicants (DSH)'.per the DSD II specifications.
